An Appeal To The Government of Pakistan

They Listen, Talk to them

Yasmeen Ali, a blogger and a regular contributor to Opinion Maker, carried out a discussion on her Blog Pakpotpourri 2. Some very pertinent questions were raised as given below. The participants gave their views very freely. There are some very renowned personalities like Admiral I A Sirohey, Shaheen Attiqur Rehman etc. who participated in the discussion. The list of the participants is given below.

Here I would like to mention my talk with Brig Amir Gulistan Janjua, a former Governor of PK (NWFP) who said that he had 40,000 militia under his command that he could order into operation anytime, but he always preferred to resolve the issues through dialogue and it worked. Force must be shown but seldom used.

These views of the concerned and responsible citizens of Pakistan deserves due consideration before initiating any operation in North Waziristan.

Some questions discussed to reach a consensus were:

  • Is Al Qaeda leadership present in North Waziristan? Will this Army offensive be the Waterloo for the militants?
  • Extent of militants manpower and logistics.
  • Is the proposed action a part of US strategy to squeeze the enemy before negotiations or a direct Pakistani interest?
  • How does the Army bring in loop the Gulbadin and Haqanni forces not in N Waziristan?
  • What would be the quid pro quo re India? Would USA be prepared to force out the excessive and intrusive Indian presence in Afghanistan?
  • How does this strategy ensure elimination of Black Water from Pakistan?
  • Would we ever be able to regain the utmost loyalty of our tribesman after this offensive?
  • Are the Armed Forces not overstretched at this point of time to open another front?

There was no dispute on the fact that the economy is suffering because of the war. Negligible FDI, soaring inflation, war funding demands, etc. are all war linked. The war is not helping Pakistan’s poor. Pakistan’s social development is being stunted while the rest of the world is moving forward. The economy of the world is turning around while our people lack drinking water, subsistence nutrition, energy, education, jobs, and Medicare. We, on the other hand are being guided by taking directions from external powers that fail to consider Pakistan’s interests.

Those living in the tribal area and people of Waziristan are the ones most affected by the war. It is their youth that has been misguided and brainwashed to believe they are answering to a higher call. Of the few thousand militants 20 percent maybe those who suffered collateral damage, 20 percent who genuinely think it is an Islamic duty to fight infidel occupying forces; 40 percent who are mercenaries out of economic necessity, and the remaining criminals and thugs settling old scores or making money. Most of the mercenaries and thugs are being trained, financed, and equipped by vested interest countries.
The majority are fighting because they have been led to believe, they fight an illegal attack by USA. The drone strategy here, has obviously backfired. They are fighting our Army and police because they believe our government and political leadership are helping the occupation and expansion of empire. The people of the tribal belt, more than any other ethnic race in Pakistan, have never hesitated from defending their motherland.

We, the Concerned Citizens of Pakistan, request the Government of Pakistan, to ensure, that our Forces should only go into North Waziristan to deal with militants at a time of our choosing if considered essential for the interests of Pakistan. Any contemplated action must not be taken under external pressure to protect foreign interests.
Concerned Citizens of Pakistan:

To me for USA and its strategy is like agitate, agitate and agitate, war is not solution of any irk, as us sanctioned Iran now apprised that its only a diplomatic tug of war we negotiate on table, it shows an elp of absurdity, its not a war game with any one, Talibans penetrated on USA`s umbrella when soviet union war occurred now they are horrified from Taliban so called brave soldiers of the land of afghans now seeming to them cruel enemies, mulling the peaceful negotiations its won`t happened usa deteriorated the whole central south Asian part an unrest in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq only to achieve goal of interest, now moving the goal post America`s economy crippling urging over negotiation now came as barred hand, India without elaborating plunged in building infrastructure of Afghanistan soon India`s economy will squeeze when America escapes from the Afghanistan, Pakistan has to defend its own soil as Taliban and insurgents sneakingly aboded upper areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and some parts of Baluchistan, to save Pak economy Pak have to aloof from usa`s strategic policy, i quote here some renownable advice in urdu ” yaar ki yaari se matlab uski khwaari se nahin” america is pakistan`s friend we build strong relations with usa as its policy but the war of usa circumventingly laid upon our country must be tackled and surgery of this ulceareor must be done expeditiously.

The appeal should also be copied to Gen. Kayani, Lt. Gen. Pasha, and to the American, Indian, Chinese, Russian and NATO Ambassadors.

    Yasmeen
The solution is in negotiations with compassion and education, and not war, which is creating more and more hatred and extremism.History is witness that the War was never a solution ( Naveed Sb can throw more light on this topic) Both the parties are looser at the end of it. It is better to give them awareness through education for better civic and decent life rather than a life full of unending vengeance, hate and fear. SZ

    Dear YAA,

I fully endorse the appeal and would like to say that all the questions framed are logical and our government should not act to protect any foreign interest at the cost of Pakistan and its poor masses.

Very well discussed by the members of Pakpotpourri.

    Warmest regards.

Count me in. You mentioned everything about pakistan but not about corruption, or is it we have accepted corruption as component of governance. I have deliberately left out good from governance.

    Well said and timely.

I do not know if you have email address to President, Prime Minister and COAS; it would be worth sending copies to them. I seriously doubt if they read the blogs or keep themselves posted with public sentiment.

If not already done, you may also want to copy following journalists:

    1. Mr. Ayaz Amir
    2. Mr. Ansar Abbasi
    3. Mr. Hamid Mir hamid.mir@geo.
    4. Mr. Kamran Khan

While I whole heartedly support our government and army in trying to eridicate terrorism, I am against fighting proxy wars for the sake of dollars.

    Regards

You are very right in adducing that the fighters in Nw are basically
motivated by the impression (rightly) that Pakistan is taking active
part in expanding the US empire in this region.
Therefore, to take the sting out of these fighter’s motivation, we
must first disassociate ourselves from the American shenanigans in the
region – Afghanistan and Pakistan .
We must stop the flow of US supplies through Pakistan, and give both
sides a level playing field. in about two to three weeks the matter
will be decided, and we all know in whose favour!
That will reduce the major portion of resistence in the Frontier. It
will then be possible to isolate whatever spots are left, and tackle
    them as suits us.
But, who is going to bell the cat, or the dog ?!

Pakistan knows this area very well and should make sure that use of force is minimal and common people do not perceive Pakisant as enemy.

America may decide to move out of the region but public memories will stay for centuries.

“YASMIN , THIS IS A NATION WHERE THEY GATHER EVERY FRIDAY TO ASK FOR SALVATION AND HOPE , AND THE MOMENT THEY STEP OUT OF THE MOSQUE THEY WILL NOT GIVE AN INCH TO THE OTHER ON THE ROAD !
ITS A NATION OF SHEEP BEING LED TO THE SLAUGHTER, NOT A PACK OF WOLVES WHICH CANNOT BE HUNTED EASILY. THAT PRIVILEGE RESTS WITH THE AFGHANS AND THE LIKES .

Yasmeen, these are very Valid and Rational questions to be asked. I am sure Shah Mahmood Quereshi has gone thru these with a fine tooth comb.. I thnks the Vital National Interests of Pakistan should be held as #1 and we must make a list of the Consequences in the form of a list, PRO and CON….them take the neccesary steps to implement Just remember the People fighting the NATO forces have very few Supporters even in the Muslim World, and if we assist them in any Way we could be easily declared a “State that Sponsors Terrorism” then we are doomed economically…..We have to tread very carefully Rgds Arif Khan

    Yasmeen Sahiba! AOA

It is a very good effort and I fully agree that negotiation is a better option than war, but the million dollar question is whether the other side will be ready to negotiate or if they do, will they be ready to abide with the terms and conditions of the agreement? In the past, they have not done so. It was just an excuse to regroup themselves.

    Best regards and best wishes.

@ Yasmin Ali and others in this blog,

While you Pakistanis are busy trying to make a villain out of the Americans and advocating late or no action in N Waziristan, your Army and the ISI has been continuing their double game, which has been going on for a decade now, as the latest report at the following link suggests….

    http://wok3.wordpress.com/2010/06/13/report-pakistans-isi-supporting-taliban/

While there is nothing new or surprising in the report, now you Pakistanis would dismiss this as a propaganda and conspiracy of the western world against Pakistan….. !

Pakistan will eventually get what it deserves …………. even GOD can not help a nation in denial …………… !!
