Zardari is a convict hence he could not be the President

LAHORE, Jan. 28: The Jamaat e Islami chief Syed Munawar Hasan , has rejected Prime Minister Gilani’s argument that President Zardari enjoyed immunity under the law and the Swiss cases against him could not be reopened.

In a press statement here Thursday, he pointed out that the Swiss cases were related to the time when Mr. Zardari had not been elected President. Besides, President Zardari had also been convicted ex-party by a Pakistani court and under the Constitution, a convicted person could not hold the office of the President. Apart from that, he said, the immunity to the President was only in regard to the Pakistani courts and not the Swiss courts.

He stressed that if President Zardari was innocent, it was his moral duty to face the courts and prove his innocence.

Syed Munawar Hasan said that there was no protection to corruption in the civilized world. On the other hand, if any holder of public office was accused of corruption or moral turpitude, he immediately stepped down to face trial. There were several instances of this nature, he said. Unfortunately, he said, Pakistan was the only country where corrupt people had been in public offices from top to bottom with a few exceptions. And that was why this country was looked down upon in the comity of nations. Pakistan, he said, had been run on dictatorial lines by civil or military rulers instead of under the law and the courts were not given any weight. This had caused moral degradation and all sorts of crimes including murders, abductions for ransom and lawlessness were on peak.
